Review of 2019

The committee can’t provide everything…………………………………………..

.

Another busy year for the society with membership still over the 600 mark, there were just a few tweaks, for example to redefine membership as owners and family – not friends which is unfortunate but start sheets have been full much of the year and residents have sometimes struggled to get a time on Fridays.

Another big change was the new rules of golf that came in January, communicating them to golfers was a problem! Many of them were quite radical e.g. touching the ground in a hazard, dropping from knee height, leaving the pin in when putting etc.

Some changes were voted in at the AGM in March – It was proposed and voted in that there would no longer be a ladies division and maximum handicap of 28 would be applied to both men and ladies. But there is still a ladies day, with non golfers welcome!

.

Alicia Saunders took over the role of captain and appointed Peter Reeves as vice captain. It was raised that new blood was desperately needed on the committee, without which we will not be able to provide the same service that members have come to expect. Nothing has changed, this is still a very important concern in 2020.

.

Peter (right) with his friend Peter Mitchell. Must comment as PM has just had his 80th birthday, and must be our oldest active golfer. There is hope for all of us because he was the winner of the President’s prize in May aged 79 (now 80!).

One constant over the year has been the presence of Tanya Seckington at the starter’s desk each Friday – a very important role and one that is much appreciated by the golfers.

.

Two very important people, Tanya and captain Alicia………….
.

We had 3 away days in the year, to Lorca, Desert Springs and Aguilon. Also the ladies were invited to join us and go on a shopping expedition so they didn’t feel left out. These days out were subsidised with raffle money collected each Friday – free coach travel and food, thanks to Alicia and Kim for making up packed lunches for the golfers!

.

The shoppers in Mojacar Pueblo…………………………….

.and the golfers at Aguilon…………………………………

.

On the course the lakes have remained full, perhaps the first cut of rough has been too long and greens have been repaired. We had a gota fria in September which closed the course for a few days, but we were so lucky to avoid the devastation that affected other areas of Murcia – Los Alcazares has still not recovered and sadly has been hit again at the end of the year. We helped in a small way when 674e was quickly raised for the nearby town of Jacarilla which was affected by the disaster, and was chosen because one of our main sponsors, Steve (from Apollo Air) lives in the area.

.

.

Another severe storm ruined our plans for the Viking Cup when heavy rain (which was forecast) arrived exactly during the 4/5 hours we were due to play. A marquee had been erected, a barbecue was ordered and cooked, a DJ provided music and everything made for a good afternoon in the shelter of the big top! Unfortunately the Vikings will have to wait another year to take their revenge.

no chance of golf on Viking Cup day – Barry Answer went to the square for breakfast……..

Our annual charity this year was to support Prostate Cancer, and a great effort by all raised the sum of 3000e.

We will definitely need volunteers in 2020 to continue providing the committee run competitions, or the fall in our standards will become obvious.

February 27th 2020 will mark the 10th anniversary of this blog – maybe I will celebrate it by creating a blog with photos from day one to the present………………..

Proposed new stroke index from GNK.

This analysis was with GNK with the analysis in the last year of 134 single stroke play competitions recorded on our handicap master by our society members.   It is hoped that GNK will get the scorecards reprinted soon and the new indexes will come into force then.  All GNK courses have been re-evaluated.

It makes sense – holes 2 and 10 have always been a problem, especially for high handicappers. Now strokes one and two!

John survived the count back calculation to win this month’s Apollo………………

IMG_5339.

.

The final Apollo of 2019 had 2 winners – John Donaldson fought off stiff opposition by virtue of count back in the November edition, and Chris McAllister proved to be the golfer of the year winning the annual trophy, Unusually no player had their handicap reduced, with the top score being 36 points. No particular reason, not windy, and sunny for most of the round. Tanya was there again to set the players off.

.

Winner

John Donaldson (17.6)………………………………………………36pts (c/b)

.

1st division

1st Lee Hobson (8.0)…………………………………………………..34pts (c/b)

2nd Jim Laird (10.9)……………………………………………………34pts

3rd Juan Jose Mediano (11.0)…………………………………….30pts

.

1st Gary Ackroyd (15.0)………………………………….. ……….36pts (c/b)

2nd Paddy McKee (15.2)…………………………………………….36pts

3rd Eric Van Nigtevegt (19.9)…………………………………….35pts

.

Gary Ackroyd changed divisions this week, moving from 14.9 to 15.0 on Monday, thus dropping into division 2. This allowed Lee Hobson take take the 1st division award but pushed Paddy McKee into 2nd in division 2!
