Another good entry, with 83 players. Perfect weather and a shotgun start for 70 old un’s and just 13 juniors (under 55!). 13 old gits played in the new division of ‘Super Seniors’ and the youngest of them at 70 years young (Peter Reeves) was the first winner. Maybe his mate Peter Mitchell can win a new division of 80+ next year with less opposition?

Thanks to Sandy and Dorothy Simpson for sponsoring the event for many years, and thanks to our new sponsors Bob and Pat Whitty for continuing to supply the prizes from 2020.

The starters this week were Tanya Seckington and Liz Beaton who were under pressure with everyone arriving for a 9am start.

Viking Cup 2019

The heavy rain which was expected this morning duly arrived, the Norwegians (especially from Bergen) probably thought it was just another golfing day. A sensible decision to spare the players from a good soaking was made before the green fee cash was handed over, so a full refund for all. The barbecue will go ahead at the Diversity bar (golf club) so turn up for 3pm.

Seve Trophy Friday October 18th 2019

Seve photo

iconic image of Seve……………

.

The original Seve Day was in May to remember when the great man passed on, but the date has been changed to October to maximise the contributions to our annual charity. Originally for brain cancer the first one was changed at short notice to the Lorca disaster fund as the town was devastated by an earthquake with a significant cost in lives and damage to the area. The chosen charities have changed each year mainly due to circumstances which have affected our society members.

This year we have opted for the Prostate Cancer charity, and money has been raised not only on Seve Day but throughout the year.It is impossible to name everyone who has been involved because so many have in some way either organised or contributed. A fantastic effort from everyone to reach the final total of 3000€, which hopefully will make a difference to someone and their families

We actually had two starters this week looking after the 87 players, thank you to Sandra Rollett and Tanya Seckington.

.

Tanya and Sandra…………

.One of the most important majors, being a singles competition, this year Lynda Lloyd has added her name to the list of Seve champions. A great year for Lynda who added this title to the Ladies Day major which she won earlier this year.

.

Lynda is the Seve champion for 2019……….

.

The prizes were simply a token so more money could go towards the cause, also some balls and towels were donated by GNK, Dee and Byron from the golf club bar made a cash donation and Jim Laird donated his sweep winnings this week. And of course the Society made a significant contribution..

.GNK staff…………

.Every player received a gift pack which contained a Titleist ball, 3 tee pegs and an information booklet.

Tuesday is the 10th staging of the Viking cup, played between UK & Ireland and Europe this year. Originally played between UK and Norway the teams have expanded to accommodate all the other nationalities who wanted to join in. 92 players with a shotgun start, it has proved to be our most popular competition. On Monday evening at 6pm in the Clover players will find out their opponents and tees, and also pay green fees and barbecue money (for those who wish to eat). The results will follow shortly after, then the food.

There have been many close finishes with the joint format of a pairs and an individual competition, and with UK & Ireland holding a 5-4 lead will the Europeans level the series? Let’s hope that the weather forecast is wrong, with rain forecast for the next four days. There will be a marquee outside the bar which will be a godsend after the game.

A lot of money was raised through the sponsorship on every tee, with perhaps 3 or 4 sponsors on each hole at 20€ each.

.Proud grandparents, 2nd division winner Barbara, and Dave with Stevie,…………..

.

This week at the presentation it was the Rollett family day. Dave was assisting captain Alicia, grand daughter Stevie gave out the prizes. Dave’s wife Barbara won division 2 and in 2nd was brother Ray Rollett ; Dave won in the raffle; Sister-in-law Sandra had been starter again, and helped Barbara sell the raffle tickets. They deserve all our thanks for showing such commitment to the society.

Don’t forget the winner of the main prize though, Denis O’Sullivan won this month’s Apollo with an excellent 40 points.

All the bunkers have still not been repaired, so again the competition was not a qualifier.

.

Next Friday is our annual charity day, the Seve trophy which this year will support the Prostate cancer appeal. The fundraiser for this has been going all year and should achieve a significant total for the charity. It has attracted a full sheet with a shotgun start at 09.03. 80 players, of which many are from Norway ready to do battle 4 days later for the Viking Cup.

Another enjoyable day out with the golf society at Aguilon. Gorgeous sunshine and magnificent mountain and sea views from the excellently maintained course (although many of us ignored the lush green fairways and sought out the dense vegetation down the ravines!).

42.5 euros for coach, golf, buggy, bacon bap, coffee, packed lunch and sweep. Nice to see so many on the coach who were new to an away day, and for taking the mic to sing us on the way home!

Peter proudly shows off his trophy……..

Friday was a special event sponsored by Barry Answer and Flagship Shopfitters Ltd. A new prov1 ball on the first tee, a tub of lake balls on the 11th, cold drinks on the 12th tee (supplied by Denise and Sue), and a free buffet at the Condado Club, along with entertainment from Randy Corwood (ex American Drifters star). Many thanks to Sandra Rollett for acting as starter.

Unfortunately some bunkers were still out of action, so the competition was a non qualifier. Congratulations to Peter Beatt who came in with a great score of 40 points to take the trophy.
