36 players on a tough day out there on Friday, perhaps a little wind, but otherwise perfect golfing conditions. But it was strokeplay, which does not favour the high handicappers – one bad hole can ruin a good round.

Unfortunately not enough ladies playing for their own prize, so just 2 divisions.

1st division

1st     Stevie Locker……………….83 – (15)………….68

2nd   George Hoskins……………89 – (17)………….72

2nd division

It is in the nature of the format that there were 9’s, 10’s, 11’s, and 12’s to finish anyone’s challenge, but Don Henry was stopped in his tracks with an unlucky 13!

– Good news = there is a special offer from IRM during December. The green fee will be 80 euros for 2 players (including a shared buggy )at any time, on any of their courses. Also it is only 30€ to play La Torre on Monday November 30th.

The planned away day to Las Colinas has now been booked for 40 players (now full but taking names for reserves), but our intended date of February 8th had been booked up before we got back to them. However, we have now got a confirmed booking for 10.30 on Wednesday February 3rd. There will be a free coach for us all.

Included: Buggy for 2 players and drink token. Drinks vouchers will be given to the Society organizer when paying in the golf shop, and are for use on the day of play, and can be exchanged in UNiK for a draught or bottled beer (33cl), glass of wine, soft drink, or tea/coffee. Also a pyramid of balls per player for use on the range.

For anyone planning to play in the Viking Cup next October the date is Tuesday October 25th. The first 40 players applying from the UK & Ireland team who played in 2015 will qualify, plus 6 captain’s picks. (contact kevin@cdagolf.com).

Each Friday there will be a free draw in the Clover for a green fee voucher during December (our vouchers expire December 31st).

Also remember that anyone putting their name down on the society start sheet must be a member by 8pm on the Wednesday prior to play or they cannot get society rates or play in our time slots.

There will not be an organised competition on Friday 25th December (Christmas Day), but a sheet will be posted in the shop so that any member wishing to play can take advantage of society rates. New Year’s Day should go ahead, and from December 1st start times are from 10am, so chance of a little lie in…

Kevin's prize table............

Kevin’s prize table…………

The competition this week required 2 scores to count on holes 1-6, 3 counting on 7-12 and all 4 to count on 13-18. With 40 players all turning up, we had 10 teams competing. With cold weather forecast for next few days (maybe even snow!) we made the most of the beautiful sunny conditions, and some excellent scores were achieved.

1st     Kim Lloyd, Dave Lloyd, John Donaldson, Pete Elgar……………………..123pts

2nd   Ken Saunders, Alicia Saunders, Kevin Smith, John Collins…………….122pts

3rd    Blair Johnstone, Kam Cheema, Geoff Hill, Sue McLellan……………….117pts

Thanks to Jim Alwell who acted as starter this week, which meant a long day with 90 minutes of handing out cards and collecting entry fees followed by a 5 hour round! And we won’t forget the free sandwiches provided in the Clover bar after the presentation. The clubhouse is also much improved, with table service for drinks and extra tables and chairs which adds to the ambiance.

Throughout December there will be a FREE draw for all players from the competition  (including winners) for a green fee voucher at the presentation on Fridays – the winner MUST be present to win!

We are organising an away day on Monday February 8th to Las Colinas, which is a top course, and for only 55€ including buggy, practice balls (and other freebies), and a free bus. When the bus is full (55 places) the entries will close, so contact Dave Lloyd if you want to be included. This is only 3 days after the first major of the year (the Anniversary trophy), so worth coming out for a long weekend.

Next week is an individual strokeplay event.

Winter is coming, and especially in Norway. Which reminds me of an August day in Bergen, when I could not have got wetter in the shower. So this week a few Bergen jokes………………

The story goes that horses in Bergen are frightened if they see a man without an umbrella……….

Q. What do you call two straight days of rain in Bergen?

A. A weekend

Meteorological experts were predicting a gargantuan flood that would destroy the world. The Pope went on worldwide TV and said, “This is punishment from God. Prepare to meet your Maker.” The President went on national TV and announced, “Our scientists have done all they can. The end is near.”

The Bergen evening news came on and said, “Today’s five day forecast – same as usual.”

What does daylight savings time mean in Bergen?

An extra hour of rain.

Sorry only one photo, and little information on the competition as I haven’t been here all week. I was a guest of San Jose hospital near Murcia where I was babysitting Sue for 4 days. Her 2nd hip replacement was a great success, and she is now back home recovering. I had to sleep on a chair which was similar to the ones you find on a ferry ship, only without any refinements. It was like trying to get to sleep on a surfboard (not done it but can imagine it!). Only rated it 2 out of 10 on booking.com

30 players (10 teams) this week.

1st     Neil Simpson, Les Hurren, Dave Wareing, Kevin Smith……………………117pts

2nd   Dorothy Simpson, Sandy Simpson, Lis Jakobsen, Jan Jakobsen………..113pts

I mentioned recently how grateful we are to members who sponsor tournaments and donate prizes. This week Eddie Reid of TGI Golf has promised to send us 48 dozen golf balls to use as we wish, and hopefully will continue that sponsorship in the future. We are happy to use his company’s logo and also thanks to Srixon who have provided the balls.

The society try to balance our green fee vouchers (kindly donated by IRM) throughout the year to ensure all majors, special events, Apollo Airs and Dublin Crystals are covered. This year we will have a few spare vouchers left and will be holding a weekly draw for players each week until Christmas (these vouchers are only valid until December 31st 2015). The 2€ raffle will continue until the end of November.

A special treat for players who are here early February – after the Anniversary trophy (February 6th) we in tend to have an awayday to Las Colinas (in the area near to Campoamor). This is still to be confirmed, but the cost is likely to be 55€ (including buggy) with a free bus. This is a top course with fantastic facilities, so not to be missed.

Gerry is disappointed that there have been no jokes on the blog recently. Well, it has quietened down now and here are a few from a local mag……….if you live on Condado maybe you have seen them, but no apologies as the members not on site might chuckle…………

I said to the waiter ‘this chicken is cold……………..’ he said, ‘ I should think so, it’s been dead 2 weeks’. Not only that, I said, ‘it’s got one leg shorter than the other’. He replied, ‘what do you want to do? Eat it or dance with it?’

Sometimes I take my whisky neat. At other times I take my tie off and leave my shirt out.

I’m on a whisky diet……………I’ve lost 3 days already.

My wife and I were fighting hammer and tongs…………….she won, she had the hammer.

My wife phoned me just before the show, and said ‘I’ve got water in the carburettor’. I said, ‘where’s the car?’ She said, ‘ in the river…………..’.

This fella is on safari in Africa when he comes upon a young elephant lying on the ground in distress. He finds a thorn in its foot, removes it and the elephant trots merrily away. 20 years on, he is standing on the street in London watching a circus pass by. When the elephant gets level with him it stops, looks straight at him, reaches out with its trunk, lifts him bodily into the air, smashes him to the ground, and jumps on him. It was a different elephant.

Intercontinental hotels have withdrawn from the clubhouse bar, but Lynn was running things this morning, with an excellent menu for the golfers.

Saturday and Sunday sees the Aguilon Ryder Cup competition, which has 7 of our members playing. Good luck to all of them.

Also November 28th is the last of the IRM trail competitions at Saurines. Entries will be taken in the golf shop from next weekend. A good price with lots of prizes, free drinks, tapas etc.

Next week is a yellow ball team competition.

Thanks to Dorothy Simpson for the poem below:

A Golf Poem

In My Hand I Hold A  Ball,
White And Dimpled, And Rather Small.
Oh, How Bland  It Does Appear,
This Harmless  Looking Little Sphere.
By Its Size I Could Not Guess
The Awesome Strength It Does Possess.
But Since I Fell Beneath Its  Spell,
I’ve Wandered Through The Fires Of Hell.My Life Has  Not Been Quite The Same
Since I Chose  To Play This Stupid Game.
It Rules My  Mind For Hours On End;
A Fortune It  Has Made Me Spend. It Has Made  Me Curse And Made Me Cry,
And Hate Myself  And Want To Die.
It Promises Me  A Thing Called Par,
If I Hit It  Straight And Far.To Master  Such A Tiny Ball,
Should Not Be  Very Hard At All.
But My Desires  The Ball Refuses,
And Does  Exactly As It Chooses. It Hooks  And Slices, Dribbles And Dies,
And Disappears  Before My Eyes.
Often It Will  Have A Whim,
To Hit A Tree  Or Take A Swim. With Miles  Of Grass On Which To Land,
It Finds A Tiny  Patch Of Sand.
Then Has Me  Offering Up My Soul,
If Only It  Would Find The Hole. It’s Made  Me Whimper Like A Pup,
And Swear That  I Will Give It Up.
And Take To  Drink To Ease My Sorrow,
But The Ball  Knows … I’ll Be Back  Tomorrow.

Stand proud you noble  swingers of clubs
And losers of  balls!
A  recent study found that the average golfer
Walks about 900  miles a year.

Another  study found that golfers drink, on
Average, 22  gallons of alcohol a year.

This means  that, on average, golfers get about
41 miles to the  gallon!

Kind of makes  you proud. Almost makes you
Feel like  a hybrid.
