Pairs Stableford Friday 26th June 2015

Terry and June with Terry Wogan.......

Terry and June with Terry Wogan…….

.

Sorry that the blog is late this week, but I am lying on the beach in sunny Algarve, and now I have the details of Friday’s competition I can pass the information on. Basically, the report is what captain Dave Lloyd said at the presentation, so don’t blame me this week!

There were 52 players and all turned up, which made it a little easier for the starter.

It was nice to play a different format, and this seemed quite popular. It was good to mix up the pairings, which made for some good conversations. Instead of the husband being constantly told that everything was his fault, we had ‘oh, that was unlucky’ or ‘that was a shame’ instead of ‘what did you do that for?’.

In the UK we have celebrity pairings on TV, and Friday we had some unusual pairings we could liken to celebrities.

Ray Vivian and Chris Sherratt from New Zealand became dame Edna and her sidekick Madge Alsopp. Peter Reeves and Les Hurren were Chas & Dave and Barry Greenall and Robert Beaton were the Chuckle Brothers. There were others but they will be mentioned later.

The next major competition will be the Barry Barker strokeplay on July 17th, and the start sheet for this will be posted on the noticeboard later in the week. Anyone who is here now and would like to attend the evening presentation at Totana tennis club (a new venue for us) please see Kim – tickets are 15€ including entertainment from the very popular Dee. The optional bus transfer is 5€ per person. First come first served so add your name early to avoid disappointment.

There were some very good scores, although the wind did get up later (as usual). The greens are still not good and recovery may take some weeks

1st     Paul Coopey & Kam Cheema  (Terry & June)……………………48pts

2nd   Borre & Sissel Hagen (Crown prince Hakon & Crown princess Mette-Marit of Norway)

3rd    Chris King & Phillip Lloyd (Ant & Dec)……………………………46pts

4th    Kevin Smith & Kim Lloyd (George & Mildred)………………….45pts

I get back to Condado next Friday but not in time for the golf or presentation, so maybe we will have another different take on golf humour!

Special K..........Kristin, Kim and Kam.............

Special K……….Kristin, Kim and Kam………….

.

The greens are improving slowly, but maybe at least another 2 weeks before we can start to appreciate them again. Following amazing scores in the midweek qualifiers (45pts, 44pts and 41pts on Wednesday) we were back to more realistic scoring, with Chris King finally ditching his bridesmaids role and becoming a champion with a fine total of 39pts. Although we had 3 divisions for the rest of the golfers it was the ladies who impressed, with the trio of Kristin Skjold, Kam Cheema and Kim Lloyd all getting 37pts and the placings being decided on the last 6 holes.

We had 42 players in the competition, of which 5 were ladies.

A great week for Chris………. last Saturday in the IRM absolut champions competition he was just pipped for the best gross on the last hole by a birdie from his playing partner Connor Mohan, who has been a member of our society.

After his fine performance on Friday, he continued on Saturday with a victory in the scratch competition at Las Colinas (74 gross), where our captain Dave Lloyd also won a prize for nearest the pin.

We had a 10 year old guest playing with us this week – young Josh Crabb scored 41 points with only 21 shots on the slope, and he played from the yellow markers! Peter Reeves was not happy to lose to someone he had to take home, send him to bed at 8 and babysit for him!

And now for a few on course photos……………………

Pete Elgar got up too late to play, so he came out onto the course with his bike, a backpack of cold beers, and some plastic glasses which he gave out to all the players until supplies ran out! A very nice thought, thanks Pete.

Next week is a pairs betterball stableford competition.

.

And finally I have to report the very sad news that one of our society members has passed away suddenly on June 3rd. Hans Pfeister was found by his wife Gaby outside their motor home after leaving him for a short while to walk their dog. They were at their home golf club in Germany when this terrible event occurred. They have both played with the society regularly when they are on site, and also their 2 sons have joined in. Hans was only 58 and had led a full life, including sky diving, flying, sea diving, horse riding and latterly golf. We pass our condolences on to Gaby and their children. RIP Hans.

4 person team Friday June 11th 2015

47 players made up 12 teams, and conditions were perfect (apart from the greens, which are still far from recovered after the maintenance program last week). 7 of the 12 teams managed scores below par, which was good considering that all 4 players must count on the last 6 holes. I could have chosen photos of the winners from a wide selection in my archives, as the 8 winners are consistently in the prizes, and all are in fine form at the moment.

1st     Kristin Skjold, Sue McLellan, Jan Skjold, Geoff Hill…………………………133pts

2nd   Kim Lloyd, Torild Lailey, Dave Lloyd, Andrew Lailey……………………….122pts

Not much to include this week, but Barry Answer insisted that I include a photo of myself in trouble……..

Just because I publish the misfortunes of others, Barry has made me show my attempt to hit my 2nd shot on the 2nd.   I was really unlucky, up against the collar of the grass and having to move the ball at least 10 yards to pass the ladies tee………. Anyway, it’s not so unusual as every tee shot out of bounds is replayed from the men’s tee in 3?

But if he is playing nasty I also have visual evidence of him even earlier in the round where he is just past the ladies tee on the 1st, about to hit a wrong ball. Actually his ball was much further……….(about another 5 yards!).

.

Next week it is the Apollo Air individual stableford.

Let’s have a few jokes at the expense of the men, and maybe the ladies will appreciate them……… (dedicated to Kim, who is 21 today).

Q: Why doesn’t it matter how often a married man changes his job?
A: He still ends up with the same boss.

Q: What do you call a married man vacuuming?
A: Doing what he’s told…

Q: What’s the difference between a G-Spot and a golf ball? A: A guy will actually SEARCH for a golf ball.

Q: What does it mean when a man is in your bed gasping for breath and calling your name?
A: You didn’t hold the pillow down long enough.

Q: Why is it difficult to find men who are sensitive, caring and good looking?
A: They all already have boyfriends.

Q: How is Colonel Sanders like the typical male?
A: All he’s concerned with is legs, breasts and thighs.

For you men who think a woman’s place is in the kitchen,
remember… that’s where the knives are kept.

Captain’s Day Friday June 5th 2013

Alicia wins her 3rd major trophy................

Alicia wins her 3rd major trophy…………….

Due to the essential maintenance work at Condado, Dave Lloyd’s captain’s day competition was moved to Hacienda del Alamo. The pictures below show that it would have been impossible to play on our greens as they are this week.

We had 50 players in the individual stableford, starting from the 1st and 10th tees to enable the players to arrive and leave together on the free coach provided (again we had a magical mystery tour on the way back, going down every back road possible, and avoiding motorways?).

The staff at Hacienda did a great job in preparing all the scorecards with the correct handicap and slope allowances, and converting the final scores into  a leader board. All the scores were also posted on the magnificent scoreboard by the 18th green. With cheap green fees and buggies, and additional green fee vouchers given for prizes, it was an day to remember for all the players.

A nice touch from IRM, who provide us with green fee vouchers for the day even though we were not playing on one of their courses. Some of our members also made donations to the prize table – thanks to Jim Alwell, Les Hurren and Peter Reeves.

Dave and Kim had an interesting theme for the prizes, with superb canvas prints of the lake on hole 11 at Condado, and drinks coasters with the same picture. Also every player was given a goody bag before play with water, fruit, cake and biscuit to sustain them on their long trek under the hot sun.

The entertainment for the evening was Tony Justice, making his first appearance at one of our events, but he only lasted a couple of numbers into his Frank Sinatra tribute before his voice box broke down, so he put a selection of Frank’s CD’s on. Neil Simpson saw an opportunity for fame, got up on stage, and mimed his way through with the assistance of our famous backing group Kim and Alicia.

Well, that’s another major done and dusted, so next week we are back to a 4 person team event.
