a few clouds over the sierra espuna..........

a few clouds over the sierra espuna……….

On Friday there was some cloud cover but temperatures were just nudging into the 20’s. Also the players had to combat a strong wind. Compare Jan Halvdan Olsen’s photo of current conditions in Norway with the weather at Condado………..

no golf in Norway............

no golf in Norway…………

Pairs were drawn out, and the match took the form of fourball matchplay, with stableford scores noted as a backup in case of a tie. In the end this was not needed, but it was so close with the result going down to the last putt of the last match. With the first and last matches being halved, the presidents team took an early lead winning games 2, 3, 4, and 5 but the captains team then fought back to take the next 5 games. A half at the last in the final game just kept their noses ahead. Strangely, the captains team have won every one of the 3 annual challenges!

TEN BEST CADDY REMARKS

#10
Golfer: “Think I’m going to drown myself in the lake.”
Caddy: “Think you can keep your head down that long?”

#9
Golfer: “I’d move heaven and earth to break 100 on this course.”
Caddy: “Try heaven, you’ve already moved most of the earth.”

#8
Golfer: “Do you think my game is improving?”
Caddy: “Yes , you miss the ball much closer now.”

#7
Golfer: “Do you think I can get there with a 5 iron?”
Caddy: “Eventually.”

#6
Golfer: “You’ve got to be the worst caddy in the world.”
Caddy: “I don’t think so . That would be too much of a Coincidence.”

#5
Golfer: “Please stop checking your watch all the time. It’s too much of a distraction”
Caddy: “It’s not a watch – it’s a compass.”

#4
Golfer: “How do you like my game?”
Caddy: “Very good , but personally, I prefer golf.”

#3
Golfer: “Do you think it’s a sin to play on Sunday?
Caddy: “The way you play, it’s a sin on any day.”

#2
Golfer: “This is the worst course I’ve ever played on.”
Caddy: “This isn’t the golf course. We left that an hour ago.”

#1 Best Caddy Comment:
Golfer: “That can’t be my ball, it’s too old.”
Caddy: “It’s been a long time since we teed off, sir..”

And the old favorite…..

The Golfer has been slicing off the tee at every hole.
He finally gives up and asks his long suffering caddy if he has seen any obvious problems. The caddy replies:

“There’s a piece of shit on the end of your club “.
The Golfer picks his club up and cleans the club face at which point the caddy says:
“No, the other end!”

This weeks golfer is Dave Cooke, who is a brummie from England. He plays very well off his 15 handicap and is generally near the prizes.

A lovely warm start for the 39 players, and this week we had a lady from Germany taking the top prize. The greens were really fast and with a strengthening breeze the scores were kept low.

A new delivery of society shirts has just arrived for those who want one (15€).

Next week is the Captain v President challenge which is a pairs event and will be drawn Wednesday night.

Remember the AGM is Wednesday March 5th in the Condado Club 7 for 7.30pm. Volunteers for the committee posts, and motions to be discussed should be sent to bookings@cdagolf.com by Wednesday February 19th.

The Viking Cup is our most popular competition of the year and will take place on Tuesday October 22nd with 88 players competing with a 09.30 shotgun start. You may wonder why this is being mentioned in February………..players were wanting to book for this year immediately after last years competition (incidentally won by UK & Ireland). It has been decided that priority would be given to those who competed in 2013, and then to others who also want to be involved in this prestigious event.

So, UK & Ireland players from last year can book now and will be guaranteed a place if they book by February 28th. After that time entries will be accepted from anyone.

It is slightly different for the Scandinavian team…………they can book now but the closing date for last years players is June 30th, and then it opens up.

The series of annual challenges is now level at 2 – 2. Who will nose ahead this year?

This weeks featured golfer is one of the Norwegian contingent – Gert Willumsen, who has reduced his handicap to 7 with frequent visits to Condado. He has just become a golf rights member, and lets hope his recent back trouble does not affect his ability to enjoy that.

This weeks joke……..

A fellow comes home after golf one Sunday afternoon, falls asleep on the couch, and doesn’t wake up until about 9 PM. His wife asks why he is so tired. “Well, You remember George, my golfing buddy? He died today, on the fourth green.”

“That’s terrible, it must have been awful” she says. “It sure was,” he says, “For the next 14 holes it was drive, drag George, chip, drag George, putt, drag George…”

Thanks to Ole Martin Saeter for the link to these fantastic photographs of our wonderful course. These were taken when the lakes were full and Condado was accepted as being one of the greatest courses in Spain. The course is still fantastic but will never get into any top 100 courses without water…………..

Next week is the Anniversary trophy (major event) with pairs being drawn on Wednesday night at 8pm in the Clover. Already we have nearly 60 entries for this celebration of the society being formed 4 years ago. The presentation will follow in the Condado Club with a simple meal of pie, mash & peas with entertainment by a Neil Diamond tribute act. This costs 10€ and will include entry to stand up/sit down bingo and a raffle, with some fantastic prizes on offer.

This weeks featured player is Dave Wareing, who is a frequent visitor and is better known as ‘sausage Dave’. He lives in Preston and is a Blackburn Rovers fan (things are looking up they have only had one manager this season!).

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Members have alerted me to the video below which shows a teaching professional (Mark Crossfield) playing Condado and giving an opinion on their tour of Murcian courses. This one shows them playing the 1st and 18th and they did rate the holes highly, and seem to be fans of Nicklaus design.

Part 1

This week’s joke of the day has turned into several……..

Murphy’s Lesser Known Laws

Light travels faster than sound. This is why some people appear bright until you hear them speak.

He who laughs last, thinks slowest.

Change is inevitable, except from a vending machine.

Those who live by the sword get shot by those who don’t.

Nothing is foolproof to a sufficiently talented fool.

The 50-50-90 rule: Anytime you have a 50-50 chance of getting something right, there’s a 90% probability you’ll get it wrong.

If you lined up all the cars in the world end to end, someone would be stupid enough to try to pass them, five or six at a time, on a hill, in the fog

The things that come to those who wait will be the things left by those who got there first.

Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach a man to fish and he will sit in a boat all day drinking beer.

Flashlight: A case for holding dead batteries.

The shin bone is a device for finding furniture in a dark room.

A fine is a tax for doing wrong. A tax is a fine for doing well.

When you go into court, you are putting yourself in the hands of 12 people who weren’t smart enough to get out of jury duty.

See you next week.
