52 players took part this week, with weather conditions good, but the greens have still not recovered and many putts were missed with balls not running true. The other critical factor was the deep rough, with many balls lost or unplayable.

Lorca awayday Wednesday May 22nd 2013

great course, fantastic scenery......

great course, fantastic scenery……

With greens still not good at Condado, 11 society members went to Lorca for only 25 euros including buggy. Surprisingly, the course was in fantastic condition with excellent greens, striped fairways and full lakes. The staff were very helpful, even arranging a reduction for one player who walked. There was also  a free green fee for the organiser (me!) but I put in 25 euros for 1st and 2nd prize (no 2 euro entry either). Compare the price with Condado, where a 6 course member had to pay 23.80 euros just for a buggy!

Yesterday I received an email from IRM offering (at last!) reduced prices until June 3rd. 38e for the public and 34e for residents any day, any time. I thought that at last they had come to their senses and had decided to compete with offers which abound (see Lorca, Desert Springs plus many more). On closer inspection, however, it stated that the offers were only at 4 courses on the trail. Condado and Mar Menor were excluded. These offers are cheaper than rates negotiated with the society. These are the 2 courses with a big society membership – is this connected?

Anyway, we had a great day’s golf in beautiful sunshine with little wind. We all found that our slope shots were severely diminished on this short but tricky course ( Chris got one shot instead of 5). Any wayward shots were lost down ravines and in water (can’t walk in and play onto the green for your nett birdie). The greens were a joy, cut close and very true.

Maybe the beers were small and expensive but we were in a good mood!

I will look at other offers around Murcia and arrange more awaydays if members are interested, with the costs (even after fuel costs) being cheaper than playing at home.

thanks for a great night Peter…….

After a super night out last year, Peter invited the golf society for another night of music and good food at Maria’s restaurant in Bol Neuvo. It seemed impossible to better last year’s event, but it came very close. The food was excellent and the music had everyone up dancing.

32 players formed 7 teams in this popular format. Fortunately we managed to avoid the showers which have been around this week, so weather conditions were good, but the greens were not. The sanded holes created problems for putting, and as a result the winning score was perhaps 3 shots higher than normal.

1st……….62.8

The recent warm weather coupled with frequent showers has allowed the rough to grow at an amazing rate – it is now a real problem to find any errant shots in the jungle.

Next Wednesday we will try out the course at Lorca, where we can play for only 50 euros a couple with buggy, and a free greenfee included (to be used for the prize). If  you want to go contact me by Monday.

Next Friday is the monthly Apollo Air individual stableford. The sheet is also up in the shop for Presidents Day on June 7th. The evening venue for that is the Condado Club (2 euros entry), with no meal (unless you want to order your own) and the entertainment is by Barrington. He is always good and will be doing his carribean theme, so put on your brightest shirt!

Golf deals in May

Lorca have a good deal throughout May – 2 green fees and buggy for 69 euros. They have now topped it with the same for only 50 euros – but only on  wednesday 22nd and thursday 23rd of May.

Contact 968113535 or email info golf@lorcaresort.com

Another good offer is at Camposol where you can play 9 holes for only 13 euros.

Desert Springs is still only 35 euros per person with shared buggy.

With your society membership card it is 38 euros any day at Hacienda del Alamo.

With our course at Condado in poor condition after the hollow tining, requests for reductions in green fees have been refused, so try these offers.

a lovely view of the 18th green with the clubhouse and lagoon behind……

Due to the state of our course after hollow tining, 22 players went to Desert Springs and played a betterball competition which was won by John Brown and Alan Gray with 44pts. The scores didn’t really matter, as we all enjoyed the well manicured course and the service which, as always, was top class. It was amazing to find out that annual membership is available at the unbelievable rate of 1358 euros. There is no entrance charge or green fee to pay either. Just a pity it is 75 minutes away, although that is not much different to the coastal courses we would have to travel to as an IRM trail member (and the small matter of another 410 euros a year, plus 8 euros green fee for each round). The drinks are smaller, but the burgers are enormous!

Apart from the 22 players in Almeria 15 golfers opted to play at Condado (with society rates) as usual. The course is gradually improving, as staff work non-stop to rake and water the sand into the greens.

Next Friday is a 4 person texas scramble back at our own course.
