shirts available in all colours and sizes............

Another hot one in sunny Spain! 24 players took part in an individual stableford played with a tricky wind which never seemed to help. It has really gone quiet on the golfing front even though there seems to be plenty of holidaymakers on site. hopefully it will pick up with a couple of major tournaments looming.

The winners were:

1st division

1st Paul Briggs 36pts (on back 9 countback)
2nd Paddy McKee 36pts (last hole countback)
3rd Rob Beaton 36pts

2nd division

1st Jim Alwell 36pts
2nd Bryan Eyles 35pts
3rd Richard Thomas 34pts

A really tight finish with the 1st 3 in the 1st division all tied on the same score. Again it was that multiple winner Paul Briggs who saved his best for the back nine.

Not much news this week if you discount all the rumours about a new clubhouse and units being leased in Al Kasar. After all the false dawns I wont discuss them until something definitely happens.

Have had a discussion with Olagolf re allocation of buggies. The rule is 40e including a SHARED buggy. For fairness when there are two paying the full rate they will get a buggy. Then any individual paying full rate will get one subject to availability. The general rule is divide the total number of 40e payers by 2 to get available buggies.

Marker posts for nearest pin and longest drive are now on site and we hope to have a card box fitted next to the buggy key drop box shortly.

Cath has arranged a night out poolside at the Sensol hotel (Camposol) next Tuesday (28th). This will be a Dire Straits tribute act.

Due to the low numbers recently the bonus ball will be replaced next week by a domino card. Then only 28 numbers need to be sold and the draw will take place at the same time as the Friday presentation.

This weeks winning number was 31 won by Pat Hughes.

We now have 465 members recruited since March 1st which is a fantastic response. We are looking at having a free members draw when the total reaches 500 which it should do in the next few weeks.

Next week sheets are up in the shop for Monday, Wednesday and Friday. The Friday comp is a pairs betterball and partners can be arranged..

4 person team Friday June 17th 2011

Phil, Lesley and Sue at Lara's bar under the wattle.............

Summer has arrived at last with temperatures well into the 30’s and the course is in great condition.

This week we had 29 players (24 in the 4 person team event). With 2 scores to count on holes 1-6, 3 scores on holes 7-12 and all 4 to count on the last 6 holes it was a testing format. Only one team managed to beat par.

The winning team with 112 points was :

Phil Tann, Kevin Smith, John Pitman and Mick Parsons.

In 2nd place 0n 107 points were:

Paul Briggs, Graham White, Rob Beaton and Andy Ball.

I noticed a couple of novel ways of keeping cool this week. Jim Alwell had an umbrella fitted to his electric golf trolley to keep the sun off him. John Pitman has been in the lake twice this week. While trying to retrieve his ball on the 4th he slid gracefully down the plastic liner into the lake. ‘Liner’ perhaps is an appropriate word as he looked like a ship being launched – he just needed a bottle of champagne (or cava) breaking over his head! Not only did he do this on Monday but he repeated the feat on Friday in the same spot! He said it cooled his feet down after searching in the long grass.

Our team indulged in the norwegian celebration of a birdie at the last by Jim – we all had a shot of jaegermeister which the vikings always seem to carry in their bag.

I am pleased to announce the venue for the after game party and presentation for the strokeplay and scratch championships has been confirmed. It will be at Lara’s bar in Camposol A. Not many people have found this hidden gem yet – even long term residents were not aware of it. It is next to Mariano’s restaurant and is at the side of the public pool. With seating for about 150 (most of it under a wattle covered pergola) it is very spanish and food is available for those who want to eat. It will be nice to sit outside and dance on a warm spanish evening. There will be no charge on the night – society fundraising (not members money) will pay for a singer or DJ (to be decided). This is only 4 weeks away so please come and join us if you are here. There will be prizes and raffles on the night for non golfers also.

Cath is arranging a trip to Camposol golf club on Tuesday June 28th to see the Dire Straits tribute – a great rock night!.

Remember society golf shirts etc can be obtained from Cath & Kev when you are here.

Bonus ball number is 31 – winner David Johnston.

Summer is coming but slowly! Everyday this week we have had a sunny start followed later by threatening clouds, thunder, lightning and then clearing up to lovely evenings. Friday was no different, with sunshine and a breeze for the golfers who all got in before the teatime shower.

The greens have recovered remarkably after the hollow tining and were pretty true. The rough is still as deep however and the golfers missing at the presentation may still be lost in it!

27 players took part in an individual stableford and the winners were:

1st division
1st Steve Wild 36pts (on contback)
2nd Paul Briggs 36pts
3rd Dave Smith 32pts

2nd division
1st Colin Nichol 34pts
2nd Mick Parsons 33pts (on countback)
3rd John Alexander 33pts

The winners received a Condado de Alhama logo’ed shirt and cap. We have a large selection of logo’ed shirts in many sizes and colours in stock and this years model is very good quality.  The Nike’s are only  35 euros and a very good 12 euro version is excellent value.   These are available to buy from the society on Wednesday and Friday nights in the Clover.

Anyone who has paid membership and not collected their card see Phil Tann when you are here. There are now nearly 430 members and there should be many more as summer sees more visitors to Condado.

Next week we will have society times on monday, wednesday and friday. On monday we shall all meet at the 1st tee at 09.00 so we can assess how many players we have and decide the format there and then. Obviously green fees must be paid in the shop before play. There will be a list in the shop so the staff know who should pay.  If you wish to book before you arrive email bookings@cdagolf.com

On wednesday there will be 2 choices – either Condado at 40 euros with buggy or Hacienda del Alamo 35 euros without buggy. We shall trial Hacienda perhaps once a month on wednesdays to see if there is a demand for an alternative course for our visitors. Olagolf members may prefer to play Condado as they have laid out a significant amount of money already and don’t want to pay twice which is understandable. This sheet will also be on the board, with times added when we see the demand.

The main weekly competition on friday will be a 4 person team event with 2 players scoring on holes 1-6, 3 players on holes 7-12 and all 4 players counting on holes 13-18. A testing format!

Scratch trophy presented by Paul Harrington................

Dave Lloyd (competitions secretary) is in the process of producing the fixture list for the rest of this year (October to December) and also all next years competitions. We are hoping to produce a society diary for next year with all fixtures in so visitors can plan their trips around the major competitions (of which there are 8 at the moment). Thanks to Paul Harrington who is donating a superb replica of the Open championship claret jug for the winner of the Scratch cup (played for on the same day as the Barry Barker individual strokeplay championship July 15th). (see image above).

The Viking cup (Norway v UK) will be played on Tuesday October 25th and already we have players coming out especially to play in that. The Norwegian team will be very strong this year so come on you brits – book a flight! It will be followed by a great evening out with food, live entertainment and transport.

It has now been confirmed that following the Captain’s day competition on August 5th we shall party on afterwards at the Sensol hotel in Camposol. We have a room booked next to the pool and a buffet will be provided. After the presentation we will be entertained by the fabulous ‘Beagles’ who are a great act singing and playing all the popular tunes you love (including a fantastic saxaphone). David Ingham will again be providing transport. Let me know ASAP if you want to attend. Contact me at barry@cdagolf.com

Bonus ball winner – number 26 – Ann Jo Boifot – penthouse block 10

The Alhama signature course here at Condado de Alhama reopened last Monday after a weeks closure for Hollow Tinning, I think all of the nine society members who played on Monday were pleasantly surprised at the condition of the course.  Apart from the greens being a little slower than normal the course was immaculate, a credit to Olagolf and the hard work of the ground staff.

On friday 32 members of the society took part in an individual Stabeford competion, with clear skies and not the hint of a breeze high scores were expected and that’s exactly what we got.

The winners were:

3rd Place

2nd Place

1st Place

1st Division

1st   Norman Kennedy 46pts
2nd Keith Hughes 39pts
3rd  Dave Thomas 38pts

2nd Place

1st Place

2nd Division

1st   Dave Harrison 42pts
2nd Dave Rollett 42pts
3rd  Shaun Witter 40pts

The bonus ball winner this week was Paul Briggs with number 27
